And honestly, the “small orders cost as much to process” argument only holds if you haven't invested in your own efficiency. A two-person shop with no e-commerce presence might have that excuse. A national manufacturer with decades of catalog data doesn't.

You also see the reverse: vendors who bend over backwards for a big order and then ghost you on the follow-up. That's not service, that's theater. The small order is where you find out if they'll actually answer when something goes wrong.

I'm not asking vendors to lose money on small orders. I'm asking them to stop treating small orders like a loss.

Three Lessons I'd Give My 2020 Self

If I could go back five years, I'd tell myself three things:

Small orders are interviews, not obstacles. Every vendor you place a small order with is auditioning for the larger ones. The vendors who didn't understand that in 2020 are no longer on our list.

Read the spec sheet first. Whether it's a 100-foot extension cord or a blood pressure monitor, the manufacturer's documentation tells you more than the marketing page or the review section.

Keep the vendors who make small orders easy. Those are the ones who'll still pick up the phone when you need 500 feet of 4 AWG on short notice.
