Southwire FAQ: Construction Wire, Equipment, and Testing Questions, Answered
I've been the office administrator for a 40-person electrical contractor since 2020. That means I handle all of our wire, cable, tool, and equipment purchasing—roughly $400,000 a year spread across a dozen vendors. I report to both operations and finance, so I see the job-site need and the invoice side of every order.

Why should a buyer care where the manufacturer is based? Because "Made in USA" documentation is a hard requirement on a lot of federal and utility projects. Southwire is one of the US-based manufacturers I can count on for those documents without a lengthy chase. When the project manager asks whether a product qualifies for a domestic preference clause, I can answer without opening a filing cabinet. Plus, the Carrollton office is where their application engineering team sits; they're the ones who pick up when the distributor can't answer.
What Does "Southwire Construction" Actually Cover?
Most people assume Southwire just makes Romex. The construction catalog is way broader than that. Building wire alone covers NM-B (Romex), THHN/THWN-2, UF-B for underground, MC cable, and service entrance cable. NM-B is for dry interior locations; UF-B is for direct burial—those two get confused all the time on job sites.
Then there's the pulling side: SIMpull conductors, cable lubricant, pulling grips, and fish tape. Southwire also publishes the voltage drop calculator and conduit fill charts that my estimators use on nearly every bid. According to Southwire's published spec sheets (southwire.com), their THHN/THWN-2 is rated 600 volts. The NEC allows 40% conduit fill for three or more conductors, and eyeballing that is a mistake.
So when I hear "southwire construction," I think of the complete system: the wire, the pulling equipment, and the engineering resources. They're designed to work together. That's the part a lot of buyers miss when they just compare price per foot.
What Equipment Does Southwire Make?
Southwire's Tools & Equipment line covers most of what sits in our tool trailer: cable cutters, wire strippers, fish tapes, and a full range of electrical testers. The voltage testers get used daily on our residential jobs. The multimeters handle voltage, continuity, and resistance checks for troubleshooting. The clamp meters and circuit finders see regular use on commercial service calls.
I'll be honest about one thing: my crew treats testers like consumables. If one gets dropped off a ladder or run over by a lift, replacing a Southwire unit doesn't require an emergency purchase order. The price is reasonable, and the tools hold up to daily site use.
Pulling equipment is where Southwire really earns its keep. The SIMpull head on their NM-B makes a difference on a long homerun. Foremen ask for Southwire lube and pulling grips by name. On a time-and-materials job, the equipment that keeps the crew moving is the equipment that makes money.
What Is the Southwire Infinity Line?
Infinity comes up in a lot of searches, and I'll admit: it confused me at first. It's a Southwire product family, but it's not one specific cable. It's a series of SKUs under the Infinity name, and it appears on distributor quotes more than you'd expect.
What I've learned as a buyer: don't assume Infinity means "budget" or "premium." I made that assumption once and ordered the wrong jacket type. It cost me a rush reorder and an unhappy foreman. Now I copy the full part number from the quote, pull the matching spec sheet from southwire.com, and confirm the gauge and jacket rating before I hit send.
Lead time and availability are the numbers that matter with Infinity. The name itself won't tell you whether it's the right product for a direct-burial run or an interior pull—the spec sheet will. Simple.
How Do You Simulate a 4-20mA Signal?
This one comes from our instrumentation and controls work. To simulate a 4-20mA signal, you replace the transmitter with a known current source so the receiving controller sees a predictable value. A dedicated process meter does this work. The Fluke 789 is the one my instrument techs ask for, so it's what I order.
Here's the process I've watched them run a dozen times:
- Disconnect the transmitter from the loop. Two current sources on one loop give you bad data every time.
- Put the 789 in source mode. Yes, it has a separate simulate mode—they're not the same. Source mode powers the loop; simulate mode takes its power from the loop.
- Connect the meter leads where the transmitter was: meter positive to loop positive, meter negative to loop negative.
- Set the output to 4mA and confirm the controller reads 0%. Then step through 8mA (25%), 12mA (50%), 16mA (75%), and 20mA (100%). The scaling is linear, so the math is easy to verify.
- Watch the loop voltage. If the supply can't push enough voltage, the meter won't drive the current at the high end. A 24V loop supply is standard, but verify the controller's input spec first.
From the purchasing side: Southwire testers handle most of our daily checks—voltage, continuity, resistance. Loop calibration is a separate function, and a standard multimeter won't do it. Keep one dedicated process meter on the truck; it pays for itself the first time you avoid a second trip.
Should We Buy Southwire or Cheaper Wire?
I went back and forth on this one for two weeks when I first took over purchasing. A non-Southwire brand quoted 18% less on a whole-house package. On paper, it was a no-brainer. But then our foreman pointed out that the jacket on the cheaper spool pulled stiff, and the crew would lose time on every run. The 18% disappeared by the third day.
The upside was roughly $2,600. The risk was a slow, miserable installation and a contract clause that let the owner reject cable with a substandard jacket. I kept asking myself whether $2,600 was worth potentially redoing the entire pull. It wasn't.
Most buyers focus on per-unit pricing and completely miss the cost of a bad pull: rework, lost labor hours, and the general contractor's schedule slipping. I'm not saying Southwire is the only wire worth buying. I've bought good off-brand cable too. If a customer's budget won't move and it's a short-term fit-out, I'll buy what fits the bid. But for the products that need consistent quality and UL documentation, Southwire is the safer call.
Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction. That's the rule I buy by now.
What's the One Thing New Buyers Always Get Wrong?
Two things, actually. First, lead time. Southwire products move through distribution quickly, but a popular THHN gauge still goes in and out of stock. Verify availability before you promise the project manager a delivery date. I use the word "promise" carefully—once it's in writing, it becomes your problem.
Second, invoicing. In 2021, I found a vendor with a great price per reel. They couldn't produce a proper invoice—handwritten receipt only. Finance rejected the expense report, and the $2,400 came out of my department budget. Now I verify invoicing capability before placing any order. Southwire's documentation has never been an issue.
Bottom line: don't let the spreadsheet make the decision. Total cost includes product quality, availability, and paperwork. Get all three verified, and you're done.
