Southwire FAQ: SOOW Ampacity, Part Numbers, and Durability Questions

I manage purchasing for a 40-person electrical contracting company—roughly $2.4 million a year across 12 vendors, split between wire, cable, tools, and safety gear. What ampacity is Southwire SOOW rated for?

SOOW stands for Service Oil-resistant, Oil-resistant, Weather-resistant. It's the flexible cord used on extension cords, generator leads, and temporary power setups. Southwire publishes ampacity values that line up with NEC Table 400.5(A)(1). Quick reference for the sizes we stock:

  • 12 AWG SOOW: 25 amps at 90°C insulation rating
  • 10 AWG SOOW: 35 amps at 90°C
  • 8 AWG SOOW: 50 amps at 90°C

But here's the catch that gets people in trouble—or rather, gets the wire in trouble. Those numbers assume 90°C terminations. Most breakers, receptacles, and lugs are rated 60°C or 75°C. So in practice, 12 AWG SOOW connected to a standard panel is limited to 20 amps per NEC 110.14(C). If you pull 25 amps through it continuously based on the jacket rating, the terminations are what overheat, not the wire itself.

I learned this the hard way in 2021 when our master electrician caught me ordering 12/3 SOOW for a generator feed that needed 30 amps. I'd read the 90°C column and thought we were fine. How do I find a specific Southwire part number like 18900000?

Southwire uses 8-digit part numbers on most of their wire and cable SKUs. A number like 18900000 won't tell you what the product is just by looking at it—it could be a Romex run, a THHN spool, or a SOOW reel. The right way to search it is through southwire.com's product search or by checking the spec sheet PDF for the category you think it belongs to.

For their tools and testers, Southwire uses shorter model numbers. The 8110 voltage tester, for instance, is a model we've bought for our foremen for years—or rather, we bought the older version of it, and the current replacement model goes by the same style of numbering. The model number is printed on the back of the unit and on the packaging.

My advice: when you find a part number, save the spec sheet with the date you downloaded it. Southwire revises part numbers when products change, and a number that was valid in 2023 might not map to the same item in 2025. The spec sheet PDF is dated, which makes the receiving process a lot cleaner.

Does Southwire still make phones?

No. And I'm honestly not sure where this one comes from—my guess is people confuse Southwire with an old telecom equipment company that had a similar-sounding name. What they do make is the infrastructure that communication systems run on: data cable, grounding wire, cable tray, and the testing tools electricians use to verify those systems. So while you can't buy a Southwire smartphone, you can wire and test the building that your phone works in.

Why are Southwire tools so durable?

People ask me why phones are so durable now, and honestly, the engineering answer is similar. The durability of Southwire's tools isn't because they accidentally picked good plastic. There are specific design decisions behind it:

Impact-rated housings. Their multimeters and voltage testers are designed to survive drops up to 6.6 feet (2 meters). That's not a marketing tagline—it comes from rubber overmolding, internal shock absorption, and testing actual drops during development. Our foremen drop testers off extension ladders more than anyone wants to admit.

CAT III and CAT IV safety ratings. Most Southwire testers carry a CAT III 600V or CAT IV 300V rating. What should I check before accepting a cable delivery?

This is the question nobody asks until after something goes wrong. In my case, we didn't have a formal receiving inspection process when I took over. Cost us about $3,200 in 2022—we accepted a pallet of what was labeled 10/3 SOOW, signed the packing slip, and only discovered during a job site inspection that the reels were mislabeled. The replacement, the labor, and the re-inspection fee added up fast.
