Look, I'm not a Southwire marketing person. I'm the one who takes the emergency call when a contractor needs cable or a meter yesterday. What does Southwire actually make?
Southwire is one of the largest wire and cable manufacturers in North America, and it also makes tools, connectors, testing equipment, and low-voltage products. The residential side knows the Romex brand for NM cable. The commercial side uses THHN, MC cable, UF-B, service entrance cable, and more. The tools division sells multimeters, non-contact voltage testers, outlet testers, wire strippers, and crimpers. It's a lot wider than people expect.
That breadth matters on a deadline. When I'm triaging an emergency material request, I'd rather deal with one manufacturer that makes the cable, the connectors, and the test tools than chase three different suppliers. Fewer phone calls. That's the bottom line.
What is networks? Is that different from power cable?
Yes. In the wire and cable industry, networks means structured cabling: Cat 6, Cat 6A, fiber optic cable, patch panels, jacks, and the hardware that carries data instead of serious electrical power.
It's related to electrical work, but it's not the same trade. A 120V circuit can kill you. A network cable won't, but it still needs to be terminated carefully and tested to the right standards. ANSI/TIA-568 is the standard most structured cabling is designed around.
Network cable often runs in the same ceilings and walls as power cable, but the termination rules are stricter. A data cable can fail certification even if it looks fine, which is why the test tools matter.
When a customer asks what is networks, they're usually trying to figure out whether their electrician can handle data cabling too. The answer is yes, if the electrician has the right cable and the right test tools.
What does the Southwire GP110 actually do?
The GP110 is a receptacle tester. You plug it into a standard 120V outlet, and it checks the wiring. It catches common problems like an open ground, an open neutral, reversed polarity, and hot-ground reversal. It also has a GFCI test button, so you can verify that a GFCI outlet trips when it's supposed to.
Here's the thing: it is not a multimeter. It won't tell you voltage under load, and it won't measure current. But for a quick outlet check, it's faster than dragging out a meter.
On a rough-in, I tell guys to keep the GP110 in the same pouch as a voltage tester. It won't tell you if a panel is live, but it will tell you if the outlet is wired wrong before you put a load on it.
Is the GP110 worth it, or should I save a few dollars?
It's tempting to think a tester is a tester. I made that mistake in my first year. In March 2024, one of our service techs was using a bargain receptacle tester on a commercial call. The tester kept flickering between correct wiring and open ground. We spent almost two hours chasing a ground fault that didn't exist. The actual problem was the tester's bent blades making intermittent contact.
The cheap tester cost less. It also cost us a morning. The GP110 isn't a premium lab instrument. It's a basic tester with a familiar layout and UL 1436 behind it, which is the standard for outlet circuit testers. At the price it sells for, I'd call it a no-brainer for a service bag. The total cost is the real cost. That $20 tester cost us about $400 in labor that day. You do the math.
Is the Southwire 2780 multimeter a good choice?
If you're doing everyday commercial and residential troubleshooting, yes. The Southwire 2780 is the model I'd recommend first. It's a general-purpose multimeter with the common ranges: AC and DC voltage, resistance, continuity, and enough safety rating for branch circuit work.
Don't buy a meter just because someone online says it's a good deal. Check the CAT rating printed on the meter. For most 120V, 208V, and 240V work, look for CAT III 600V or higher. That's the IEC 61010-1 measurement category that tells you it's designed for building distribution panels and similar environments. If a meter doesn't have a CAT rating printed on it, that's a red flag.
If you're working around VFDs or sensitive electronics, true RMS is worth looking for. But don't let that hold you up. I'm not saying the 2780 is the only meter worth buying. If you test motor drives every day, you may need a more advanced model. For daily commercial work, it's honest and reliable.
Also consider where the meter will live. A multimeter that stays in a drawer can be the cheapest option. A meter that rides on a truck takes abuse, so a decent rubber boot and case are worth paying for.
Why would anyone buy a Southwire backpack?
Because a hard plastic toolbox on a roof is miserable. My first year in the field, I showed up with a plastic tool box and a meter. Getting it up an extension ladder was a two-trip job. On one service call, I dropped the box halfway up and spent the next twenty minutes picking screwdrivers out of a flower bed. I bought a Southwire backpack the same week.
It's not magical. If you're carrying a full set of conduit tools, you still need a larger bag. How do I choose the right Southwire cable?
Start with the application, not the jacket color. THHN goes in conduit. NM cable, like Romex-brand, is for dry indoor framing. UF-B is for direct burial and damp locations. MC cable is for exposed commercial areas where NM isn't allowed or won't hold up. A 14/2 NM cable and a 14/2 UF-B cable can look similar from the end of a roll, but they are not interchangeable.
Then check voltage drop before you pull a long home run. The NEC's informational notes recommend staying within 3% voltage drop on a branch circuit and 5% total. Southwire's online voltage drop calculator makes that check quick.
Before you substitute anything, check the jacket markings and the listing. A different product with the same amp rating may not have the same insulation rating or sunlight rating. Pulling the wrong size wire the first time is more expensive than pulling the correct size. That's where value over price actually works. The cheapest bid on the spool doesn't mean the cheapest job when you factor in downtime, rework, and callbacks.
Is Southwire just the Romex brand?
No. Romex is a brand name for NM cable, and it's now part of Southwire. But Southwire's catalog goes much wider: THHN, UF-B, MC cable, tray cable, low-voltage cable, testers, meters, connectors, and network cabling.
This isn't trivia. It affects how you write a spec. If you write Romex when you need a direct-burial cable, you're ordering the wrong material. Brand names are shorthand. The actual specification needs to name the cable type, the size, and the rating. That habit saves more money than hunting for coupons.
