USB Power Delivery While Recording? Quick Charge vs. PD for Your Office Setup
Look, I order a lot of things. From paperclips to projectors. But one of the most common requests I get from my team is for better charging solutions. Everyone wants their phone, tablet, or laptop to charge faster, especially when they're recording video or on a long call. The two big standards you hear about are USB Power Delivery (PD) and Qualcomm Quick Charge.
Here's the thing: this isn't a 'one size fits all' situation. The right answer depends entirely on what devices your people are using and what they're doing with them. So I’ll break this down by the different scenarios I’ve seen in my own office.
The Three Scenarios I See Most Often
After managing orders for our team of about 400 people across two locations, I've seen three distinct patterns for charging needs.
Scenario A: The Standard Office Worker (Laptop + Phone)
This is most of my team: they have a company laptop (usually a Dell or a MacBook), a personal Android or iPhone, and maybe a pair of wireless earbuds. They need a cable that can charge both their laptop and their phone without a ton of fuss.
For these folks, USB Power Delivery (PD) is the no-brainer. It's the standard for laptops (MacBooks, many Dell XPS models, Surface devices). A good 60W or 100W PD cable will charge a laptop at full speed. It'll also fast-charge an iPhone (iPhone 8 and later) or a newer iPad. The key here is universality. One cable for the two most important devices.
Real talk: I switched our whole department to a single 100W USB-C PD cable per desk. It cut down on cable clutter and the confusion of 'which charger goes with which laptop.' We even got a few comments from the finance team about the cleaner look.
But wait, what about the Android users with Quick Charge? I'll get to that.
Scenario B: The 'Power User' (Recording Video, Heavy Meetings)
This is the tricky one. I have a handful of folks—our marketing manager and a couple of salespeople—who record a lot of video content for client pitches or internal training. They're also on Zoom calls for hours. Their phone or tablet is plugged in while it's recording, and they need it to actually gain charge, not just slow the battery drain.
The assumption is that a higher wattage charger will always solve this. But it’s not that simple.
For an iPhone user recording a video: USB PD is essential. The iPhone 14 Pro Max, for example, can pull about 27W via PD. It'll charge noticeably faster than a standard charger. The phone will stay cool and the battery will gain charge even while recording 4K video.
For an Android user with a Qualcomm chipset (like a Samsung Galaxy): Quick Charge 4+ or 5 is the best bet. Quick Charge 4 and 4+ are actually compatible with USB PD, which is great. But Quick Charge 5 (often on Samsung's 'Super Fast Charging 2.0') can hit 45W or more on compatible chargers. Again, it's about matching the phone's fast-charging protocol.
One of my biggest regrets: buying a bulk order of cheap 'universal' 30W chargers last year. They had PD, which was fine for the iPhones, but they didn't support Quick Charge 3.0 properly. Our Samsung users said their phones were charging 'like they were from 2015.' I wound up having to buy separate Samsung-branded chargers for them. The $50 I saved per unit cost me more in frustration and repeat orders.
Scenario C: The Warehouse & Field Crew (Quick Charge is King)
This is a different world. Our team on the warehouse floor and the field technicians don't use laptops. They use ruggedized Android phones or tablets. They don't care about USB PD for laptops. They need their battery to go from 20% to 80% in 15-20 minutes during a break.
For this group, Quick Charge 3.0 or 4.0 is the only logical choice. Their devices almost all have Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. A 27W Quick Charge 3.0 car charger or wall charger is cheap ($15-25) and will give them a massive speed boost.
I made a mistake here too. I initially tried to standardize on one charger type for the whole company. When I ordered a batch of 60W PD chargers for the warehouse team, they were too bulky, too expensive, and didn't work with their phones' native charging protocol. Their phones just pulled the standard 5W. It was a complete waste of money.
So the bottom line: for the field crew, go big on Quick Charge. Don't overthink it.
How to Determine Which Scenario You're In
Here's a quick guide I use when ordering for a new team or a new project.
- Check the dominant device type. If 80% of your team uses iPhones and MacBooks, go all-in on USB PD. If you're a Samsung Galaxy shop, lean towards Quick Charge 4.0 or 5.0 (which is backward-compatible with PD).
- Ask about 'power-hungry' tasks. Who records video? Who uses their phone or tablet as their primary computer for hours on end? These people need the fastest protocol your devices support.
- Don't mix and match 100%. It's surprisingly inefficient. Standardizing on one primary protocol (like a good 45W PD charger that covers most laptops and newer phones) and buying a separate batch of QC chargers for a small set of users is better than trying to find a 'universal' charger that does everything poorly.
When I took over purchasing in 2020, I thought I could just buy a bunch of high-wattage chargers and call it a day. I was wrong. The key was understanding the scenario, not just the wattage. It's tempting to think that a 60W charger is always better than a 30W one. But it's only better if your device can pull that power in a protocol it understands.
Final Thought: Quality Matters Here
I know budget is always a factor. A generic $10 charger from an online marketplace is cheaper than a $25 Anker or Belkin. But the quality of the charging experience is a direct reflection of your company's professionalism.
When a client is on a video call with our sales team, and the salesperson has to stop mid-conversation because their phone is at 5% and their cheap charger isn't keeping up… that looks bad. It's a $15 problem that cost us a $50,000 contract. That's not an exaggeration.
Spending the extra $10-15 per desk on a certified, well-reviewed cable from a brand like Southwire (yes, they make excellent commercial-grade USB-C cables) or a reputable charger manufacturer is an investment in uptime, productivity, and brand image.
Bottom line: Don't just buy the cheapest option. Buy the right option for the scenario.
