Why Electrical Supply Orders Go Wrong—and Why It's Not the Supplier
I work at a desk. My title is office administrator, but the job is really purchasing for a mid-size electrical contractor—about sixty orders a year across eight vendors, from cable to test tools. I don't pull wire or terminate panels. I place the orders, process the invoices, and take the calls when something lands wrong. And sitting in that chair gives you a view of the supply chain that the field doesn't get to see.

The Problem Nobody Wants to Talk About
Last month, a project lead needed 300 feet of 12/2 UF-B, and the supply house said three days. He looked at me like I could make the truck drive faster. I understood the frustration. What he didn't know was that the material had been in a quote folder for a week under the wrong item number. The vendor was fine. The wire was fine. The order was wrong.

In the electrical world, it's wire connectors, cable connectors, lugs, terminals, splice kits—each with a size range, a material, a temperature rating, sometimes a tool requirement. "Connector" is a category, not a part.
I learned never to assume the word means the same thing to everyone. We approved a connector by name once and received a box of parts that looked nothing like what the job site needed. Nothing wrong with the vendor. Wrong spec, our side.
Now, when the request says "connector," I send back four questions: type, gauge range, material, environment. It takes 20 seconds. Skipping it costs a restock fee and a day of schedule.
What This Costs When the Work Gets Big
You might think I'm describing small problems—a few hundred feet of cable, a restock fee. Sure. Until it scales.
Look at the battery plant in Kansas, the big EV facility going up near De Soto. Projects like that don't order 500 feet of anything. They order hundreds of reels, thousands of connectors, miles of cable, and every line item is an opportunity to repeat a small mistake at industrial scale. One wrong component, multiplied across dozens of electrical rooms, becomes real money.
The surprise, for me, wasn't the price of the material. It was how much we spent on the second order—the reorder, the rush freight, the crew standing still waiting for a truck to arrive.
The second order is where the money goes.
In my role, the cheapest thing I can do is ask a boring question early. I once processed a $2,400 write-off because a vendor couldn't provide a proper invoice and accounting rejected the expense. Extreme case. But the principle is the same: the gap between the field and the office is where the cost lives.
The Fix Is Boring, But It Works

So the next time material is late and you're ready to blame the truck, look at the PO first. More often than not, the problem was already there—on paper, in our own handwriting.
